Tree Services in Upper Arlington

Keeping Upper Arlington's Canopy Healthy

The canopy here is the whole point. Streets laid out in the nineteen twenties and thirties were planted with shade trees that are now eighty and ninety feet tall, arching over slate roofs and brick chimneys on lots that were never particularly wide to begin with. It is beautiful, and it means almost every large tree in this community has a target under it.

Our local crews and ISA-Certified Arborists work these streets regularly, and the constraints here are unusual. There is rarely room to drop a limb, the trees are old enough that internal decay is common, and the value of keeping one standing is high enough that removal should be the last option rather than the easy one.

Tree Service Solutions for Every Situation

Big old trees on small lots close to houses call for a specific set of skills. Here is the work our crews handle here.

Tree Trimming

When a ninety-foot tree stands twenty feet from the house, the deadwood and the overextended limbs are directly above something expensive. Our tree trimming in Upper Arlington removes those first, reduces leverage on the longest limbs, and thins the canopy so wind moves through it, all worked with ropes rather than dropped.

Tree Removal & Stump Grinding

Occasionally a tree of this age is genuinely finished, hollow through the base or dead in the top, and it sits between two houses on a fifty-foot lot. We do tree removals in Upper Arlington in controlled pieces, lowering everything by rope and using a crane where the site demands it, then grind the stump well below grade.

Tree Cabling & Bracing

Trees that grew up crowded together on narrow lots developed tall divided trunks with tight unions high in the canopy, and those are what split in an ice storm. Installing cabling and bracing supports that union and preserves a tree that would be impossible to replace at anything like its current size.

Tree Health Programs

Old trees in confined root space decline slowly. Pavement, driveways, additions, and decades of foot traffic all compact the soil, and the canopy thins a few percent a year until somebody finally notices. A seasonal health program brings a certified arborist out on schedule to track that and treat the underlying condition rather than the visible symptom.

Tree Fertilizing

Root space here is limited by pavement on one side and a neighbor on the other, so the soil that is available has usually been compacted for decades and holds nutrients the tree cannot reach. Our deep-root fertilizing treatments inject a slow-release feed directly into the root zone below the turf, which also fractures tight soil and gets air to the roots.

Insect & Disease Management

Scale builds on maples until branches start dying back, borers move into anything already stressed, and the fungal leaf diseases run through the older ornamentals every wet spring. Our pest and disease treatments begin with a proper diagnosis, because on a tree this valuable guessing is not an acceptable approach.

Lightning Protection

The tallest trees on these streets stand very close to houses with slate and tile roofs, and a strike that runs down a trunk can take out both the tree and a good deal of what is next to it. lightning protection systems conduct the charge safely to ground through copper, which is routine protection for a specimen tree of real value.

Arborist Reports

With trees this large sitting this close to property lines, questions come up regularly: a shared tree with a neighbor, a condition report before a sale, an insurance claim, or a city permit application. Our arborist reports give you a written, defensible assessment from a certified professional.

Commercial Tree Care

The commercial corridors, the schools, the churches, and the apartment properties here all carry the same mature canopy over sidewalks and parking. Our commercial tree service provides scheduled inspection and pruning, removals, and storm response on a cycle that keeps risk managed rather than discovered.

We schedule around business hours and school activity and document each visit for your records. For an owner with several addresses, we will build one plan across the properties with a single point of contact instead of quoting them one at a time.

Emergency Tree Services

When an ice load or a summer storm brings down a limb from eighty feet onto a roof or across a street, it needs to be handled immediately and carefully. Our emergency tree services in Upper Arlington get a crew out to make the area safe, remove what is hazardous, and clear the debris.

Professional Tree Service Throughout Upper Arlington

This is one of the most impressive canopies in central Ohio and it is dominated by pin oak, red oak, sugar maple, and American beech, with London plane, sweetgum, and enormous old Norway maples along the older streets. The pin oaks show yellowing between the leaf veins almost everywhere, since the soil here runs alkaline enough to lock up iron regardless of how healthy the tree otherwise is. The Norway maples are reaching the end of their useful life more or less together, which means a steady stream of removals over the next decade. Ash is gone after emerald ash borer, and any that still stands is brittle enough to be dangerous.

The limiting factor on nearly every property here is root space. Houses sit close to the street, driveways and walks cover a large share of the ground, and a century of traffic has compacted what soil remains, so mature trees are working with a fraction of the root area their canopy size would suggest. That shows up as thin crowns, short annual growth, and slow recovery from drought. On top of that the weather delivers summer straight-line winds and winter ice and heavy wet snow onto trees with long horizontal limbs over roofs. Pruning for wind and ice load ahead of the season is not optional on a street like this.

Why Homeowners Rely on Joshua Tree Experts

On trees this large and this close to houses, the margin for error is small. Here is our standard.

ISA-Certified Professionals

A certified arborist evaluates your trees and writes the recommendation. With a mature canopy that usually means finding a way to keep the tree, because a tree of this size cannot be replaced in a lifetime and the community loses something every time one comes out unnecessarily.

Local Experts Serving Ohio Properties

Our crews work these streets and know how the lots are laid out, where access is impossible, and which species on which blocks are declining together. That knowledge means accurate planning before the truck shows up rather than improvising in your driveway.

Honest Pricing Without Surprises

You get a written scope and price before anything starts, including protection of the landscaping and cleanup. If we get up into the tree and find decay or a condition we could not see from the ground, we come down and talk it through with you before doing more.

Talk With a Upper Arlington Tree Service Expert Today

If you have a large tree over the house and no idea what condition it is actually in, a ground-level look by somebody who does this every day will tell you a great deal. We will assess the property, separate what needs doing now from what can wait, and leave a written plan and price. There is no charge and no pressure.

Beyond Tree Care Services

The same local team can look after the lawn and the perimeter under that canopy. Both programs launch with the new location.

Lawn Care (Coming Soon)

Turf under a heavy canopy gets very little light and competes with tree roots for water, which is why so many lawns here go thin under the big trees. Lawn care in Upper Arlington is coming soon and will cover fertilization, weed control, grub treatment, and fall aeration with overseeding.

Pest Control (Coming Soon)

Older houses on shaded lots give ants, wasps, and spiders plenty of entry points, and mosquitoes hold in the damp shade all summer. Pest control treatments in Upper Arlington are coming soon and stay exterior and perimeter only.

Do I Need a Permit to Remove a Tree in Upper Arlington?

+

Frequently, yes, and this community takes it more seriously than most. Street trees in the right of way between the sidewalk and the curb belong to the city and require city involvement. There are also regulations covering trees on private property in certain circumstances, and requirements about replacement planting.

How Much Does it Cost to Remove a Tree?

+

Access drives the number on these lots far more than size does. A large tree with no truck access, a house on one side, a fence on the other, and a slate roof underneath has to be taken apart piece by piece and lowered by rope, sometimes with a crane set in the street. Stump grinding in a confined space, debris haul-off through a narrow side yard, and protecting the landscaping all add up. An on-site look is the only honest way to price it.

What Are the Benefits of Tree Trimming?

+

On a mature tree over a house, pruning is risk management first. Removing deadwood and shortening the longest limbs takes away the pieces most likely to fail and reduces the leverage on what remains. Thinning lowers the wind resistance of a dense canopy and lets more light through, which helps both the tree and whatever is trying to grow under it. The improvement in appearance is secondary to what stays off the roof.

How Often Should I Trim My Trees?

+

Three to five years suits most mature shade trees here, but trees directly over a roof or a driveway often want a shorter cycle because deadwood accumulates and any single failure is expensive. Young replacement trees do better with lighter attention every two to three years while their structure is being set. An arborist can look at what is on your lot and put a schedule together tree by tree.

What Time of Year is Best to Prune My Trees?

+

Late winter before bud break is best for most species here. The structure is visible, response growth is strong, and the insects and fungi that spread disease through fresh cuts are dormant. That matters especially for the oaks, which are everywhere on these streets and should only be pruned in the dormant season because the beetles that carry oak wilt are active while the tree is in leaf. Dead or hazardous limbs come out whenever they are found.

What Does Tree Fertilizing Include?

+

It starts with determining what the tree is actually missing, which on compacted urban soil is usually root access rather than fertility. A deep-root application injects a slow-release feed into the root zone beneath the turf, where the tree gets it and the lawn cannot intercept it, and the injection helps open soil that decades of traffic have packed tight. For the iron chlorosis so common in pin oaks on alkaline ground here, we treat that specific deficiency instead of applying a general feed.

Why Do My Trees Need Cabling?

+

Cabling supports a structural weakness that pruning cannot correct. On these narrow lots, trees grew tall and divided, and where two stems of similar size meet at a tight angle the union has bark trapped inside it and never becomes strong. A heavy ice load or a hard gust can split the tree down the middle and take half of it onto a roof. A cable set high in the canopy limits how far the stems can separate and removes the peak load from the union. On a tree this old it is a very small price, and the hardware is inspected regularly.
